It hardly ranks as one of the most adventurous football tips of all time, but all signs point to a comfortable Spurs win on Sunday. The North London side should have too much for the Saints and could easily rack up three or four against an under-strength Southampton defence. A 3-1 victory for the away side, therefore, looks like a fairly safe and reasonable prediction. As you may know, we are known as one of the best football tipsters so following our football betting tips is never a bad idea!
This Sunday’s lone Premier League game kicks off at 4pm.
The clash sees Mauricio Pochettino take his Spurs side to former club Southampton, in a matchup which almost every football tipster sees going only one way.
After Liverpool’s stunning win over Manchester City last week, fifth-placed Spurs need three points from St Mary’s to keep up the chase for the top four. Southampton fans, meanwhile, find themselves looking nervously over their shoulder at the drop zone. They will be hoping that the return of their old boss – and former midfield general Victor Wanyama – can inspire an unlikely result which will help them drag themselves up from their current lowly 17th spot.
Following a controversially conceded late equaliser which saw them draw 2-2 with Watford last weekend, Southampton head into their game with Spurs on a run of ten Premier League games without a win. That poor run stretches all the way back to November and has included chastening defeats by Leicester, Crystal Palace and Sunday’s opponents Spurs, who put five past the Saints at Wembley on Boxing Day.
On the flip side, Spurs have been putting together arguably their most consistent run of results of the entire season in recent weeks. The North London outfit’s last five Premier League games have seen them win four and draw the other, scoring 15 and conceding only three in the process. Whilst two of those three goals conceded were scored by Southampton when they visited Spurs in December, it is no surprise based on those form figures that most Premier League tips for this weekend predict a big away win.
As well as having a significant edge in terms of overall form, Tottenham also possesses two players in outstanding recent goalscoring form, in the shape of Harry Kane and Heung Min Son. The pair’s goals last weekend saw Kane become Spurs’ leading all-time Premier League goalscorer and Son hit the back of the net for the fifth home game in a row.
Southampton, on the other hand, have only one player within their squad to have scored more than five in the league this season (the injured Charlie Austin with six) and as a team have only scored 23 Premier League goals all campaign. There are a lot of potentially worse football betting tips for this weekend, therefore, than backing Spurs to win to nil on the South coast.
In what is one of few recent pieces of good news for Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino, his squad have no new injury concerns ahead of the visit of Spurs on Sunday. Both Maya Yoshida and Charlie Austin, however, remain side-lined with the hamstring injuries that have already seen them miss multiple matches.
Much as Austin’s goals are sure to be missed by Southampton, it may well be the absence of Japanese international Yoshida that impacts them most this weekend. After the departure of Virgil Van Dijk to Liverpool, after all, Yoshida is arguably Southampton’s first choice centre-back and his side could have done with his cool head when trying to quieten Harry Kane and co.
On the Tottenham side, both Harry Winks and Danny Rose have recently been ruled out at least for the remainder of January with ankle and knee complaints, respectively. That is likely to mean Ben Davies will start at left back, whilst Southampton old boy Wanyama could be restored to a central midfield berth.
Another former Saint, in the shape of Toby Alderweireld, has been making good progress in his rehab from a long-term hamstring injury but isn’t expected to be available for the Spurs first team until February 4th at the earliest.
